What is a microchip?
A pet microchip is a small device about the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted under your pet’s skin, usually between their shoulder blades. The procedure is safe for all pets and fairly painless. All they may feel is a small pinch from the needle. Once scanned, the microchip can be used as a permanent form of identification for your pet. It also contains your pet’s medical history and your most recent contact information. This is why it is important to keep your contact information up-to-date so you can easily be contacted if your pet is found and brought in to a veterinary clinic or animal shelter.
Can I track my pet?
While it might give you peace of mind knowing where your pet is at all times, microchips are not GPS trackers. Microchips are a permanent means of identification. Once implanted, the device is not able to track your pet’s location in real-time. However, should they ever get lost, their microchip can be scanned to get in contact with you so that you and your furry loved one can be reunited.
